I think she has it backwards. You are supposed to put the demon in the circle.

I’ve read accounts of both actually. I think in some situations, you could have a circle to protect the summoner and a circle to contain the summoned. The spellcaster in the circle worked for this situation in the story since it has a paranormal “paint yourself into a corner” sort of element.
